Our Instantly AI review in short: Instantly is a capable cold email tool, with unlimited sending inboxes and built-in warm-up from about R782 a month. For South African businesses, POPIA sets the limit: you may email someone who is not your customer only once, to ask for consent. Use Instantly inside that rule.
Digital Consulting is a Cape Town agency for web design, SEO and AI visibility. We have used Instantly for our own B2B outreach, and clients who want more leads often ask about cold email. We answer that here for business owners, with prices checked on 27 October 2026. Nothing in this article is legal advice.
What Instantly does
Instantly is cold email software. You connect your email inboxes, upload a list of contacts, write a short sequence of emails, and Instantly sends them for you. It spreads the sending across all your inboxes, which Instantly calls inbox rotation, and collects every reply in one shared inbox.
Every paid plan includes unlimited email accounts and unlimited warm-up. Extras cost credits: Instantly's lead database, which it says holds 450 million B2B leads, an AI Reply Agent that answers replies for you, and website visitor identification, which only works for traffic from the US.
Cold email and POPIA: what South African law allows
POPIA section 69 prohibits direct marketing by email unless the person has given consent or is already your customer. It allows you to approach someone who is not a customer only once, to request consent, in the prescribed form.
For cold email, that means:
- Companies are covered too. POPIA defines a "person" as a natural or a juristic person, so a company's details can also be protected.
- The first email must ask for consent. The Information Regulator's Guidance Note on Direct Marketing says the first message to a non-customer must be a request for consent. It also counts LinkedIn direct messages as electronic communication. The note says it is advisory.
- Existing customers have their own rule. You may market your own similar products to existing customers, if you got their details during a sale and give them a free way to opt out in every message.
Every marketing email must also identify you and give an address for opting out. If you plan to run cold email to South African businesses, speak to a POPIA attorney first.
How South African businesses can use it
Asking for consent, once
The lawful first step with a new South African prospect is a single, polite email that explains who you are and asks whether they would like to hear from you. Instantly can send that email from several warmed-up inboxes and catch the replies. Only the people who say yes go into a follow-up sequence.
Following up existing customers
You can use Instantly to email past customers about similar products or services, with an opt-out in every message. Here a sequence of several emails is allowed.
Prospecting outside South Africa
Instantly's sending policy requires you to follow the law in your recipients' country, such as CAN-SPAM in the United States. If you sell abroad, check that country's rules before you send.
Warm-up and deliverability
New inboxes need to build a sending reputation before you use them. Instantly's warm-up adds your inboxes to a pool of other Instantly users that send and open emails between them. Instantly says to warm up for at least two weeks, until the health score is above 90%.
Our tips:
- Send from a separate domain, not your main business domain. Instantly's own deliverability guide recommends this.
- Keep each inbox to about 30 campaign emails a day.
- Keep spam complaints low. Google asks senders to stay below 0.1% and never reach 0.3%, and Yahoo sets the same 0.3% limit.
Instantly pricing in rand
Instantly charges in US dollars, and its terms say fees exclude taxes. The rand amounts below use R16.65 to the dollar (Xe mid-market rate, 27 October 2026).
| Plan | Price a month | Contacts | Emails a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Growth | $47 (about R782) | 1,000 | 5,000 |
| Hypergrowth | $97 (about R1,615) | 25,000 | 125,000 |
| Light Speed | $358 (about R5,959) | 100,000 | 500,000 |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | 500,000+ |
Source: Instantly pricing. Yearly billing brings Growth down to $37.60 a month (about R626). "Contacts" is the total you can upload, not a monthly allowance, according to Instantly's plans overview.
Before you pay:
- You pay by debit or credit card.
- Fees are non-refundable, so use the free trial first.
- The lead database and AI features use separate credits, from $47 a month.
If you are starting out, Growth is enough to test one campaign.

Is there a free plan?
No. Instantly offers a 14-day free trial with no card needed. It allows two email accounts, 250 contacts and 1,000 emails. Trial accounts that are not upgraded are deleted after the trial.
Instantly compared with lemlist, Smartlead and Apollo
We haven't used these three ourselves, so the table uses each one's published price.
| Tool | Cheapest paid plan | Roughly in rand | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instantly | $47 a month | R782 | Unlimited inboxes and warm-up |
| lemlist | $69 a month | R1,149 | Unlimited users |
| Smartlead | $39 a month | R649 | 6,000 emails, 2,000 contacts |
| Apollo | $65 a month | R1,082 | Per user; has a free plan |
Smartlead is the cheapest to start. Instantly's advantage is that every plan includes unlimited inboxes and warm-up.
Limits, and who should skip it
Instantly is the wrong tool if:
- you want to send sequences to South African businesses that never agreed to hear from you
- you need to pay in rand, or want a refund option
- you only send a handful of emails a week, which your normal inbox can handle
- you can't wait two weeks for new inboxes to warm up
- you want to identify visitors to a South African website
Frequently asked questions
Is cold emailing legal in South Africa?
Only within limits. POPIA section 69 allows email marketing to people who gave consent and to existing customers. You may contact anyone else only once, to ask for consent. The Information Regulator says that first message must be the consent request. Speak to a POPIA attorney before you run a campaign.
How much does Instantly cost in South Africa?
Instantly's Growth plan costs $47 a month, about R782 at R16.65 to the dollar, for 1,000 contacts and 5,000 emails a month. Yearly billing brings it to $37.60 a month. You pay in US dollars by card, fees exclude taxes, and they are not refundable.
Does Instantly have a free plan?
No. Instantly has a 14-day free trial that needs no card. You can connect two email accounts, upload 250 contacts and send 1,000 emails. If you don't upgrade, the trial account is deleted, so export anything you want to keep before it ends.
How many emails can I send per inbox each day?
Instantly recommends about 30 campaign emails per inbox a day. Warm up new inboxes for at least two weeks first, and send from a separate domain so your main business email keeps its reputation. To send more, add inboxes rather than raising the daily limit.
Want it done for you?
Digital Consulting can set up your sending domains and inboxes, warm them up, and write a consent-request email that fits POPIA. We can also connect the replies to your email platform, so people who say yes get your follow-ups.
