What is Google Ads?
Google Ads is Google's advertising platform, called Google AdWords until 2018. Your ad appears at the top or bottom of Google's search results, marked "Sponsored", when someone searches for words you've chosen. You set the budget and pay only when someone clicks.
StatCounter's figures show that 91.75% of searches in South Africa happen on Google (StatCounter, September 2026), so search ads reach people at the moment they look for a business like yours.
Every search runs an auction. Google ranks the ads by your bid, the quality of your ad and landing page, and the context of the search, and you often pay less than your maximum bid (Google: Ad Rank). A better ad and page can beat a bigger budget.
Besides search ads, South African businesses can run Performance Max, Shopping ads for online shops, YouTube video ads and Demand Gen ads. Some newer formats haven't reached South Africa yet: Google shows ads inside AI Overviews in a list of other countries, not here, although ads still appear above and below AI Overviews (Google: ads in AI Overviews).
How much does Google Ads cost in South Africa?
You choose your budget, and Google has no minimum. What you pay per click depends on your industry and your competitors. These are the ranges one South African agency, Growth Pulse Media, published in April 2026 from the accounts it manages:
| Industry | Typical cost per click |
|---|---|
| Legal services | R45 to R65 |
| Insurance | R35 to R55 |
| Financial services | R30 to R50 |
| Medical | R20 to R35 |
| B2B services | R20 to R35 |
| Home services | R18 to R30 |
| Property | R15 to R28 |
| Restaurants | R5 to R12 |
Source: Growth Pulse Media, Google Ads benchmarks for South Africa. Other agencies report higher legal costs, so treat these as rough guides. Google adds 15% VAT to the ad spend of every South African account (Google: VAT in South Africa).
For our own SEO campaign in Cape Town, Google forecast about R28 a click and just under R500 per enquiry at R200 a day. Your own numbers come from Google's Keyword Planner and your first month of data.
Google Ads vs SEO vs Facebook ads
Three ways to get found by South African customers. Most businesses do best with more than one.
| Google Ads | SEO | Facebook and Instagram ads | |
|---|---|---|---|
| When people see you | When they search for what you sell | When they search, in the unpaid results | While they scroll, before they search |
| How fast it starts | Days, once your ads are approved | Usually months | Days, once your ads are approved |
| What you pay for | Each click, in an auction | The work, with no cost per click | Mostly every 1,000 views, in an auction |
| When you stop paying | The ads stop at once | Rankings fade slowly | The ads stop at once |
| Best for | People ready to buy now | Steady leads for years | Making people want what you sell |
Digital Consulting also does SEO and AI visibility, Facebook and Instagram ads and ChatGPT ads, so we'll tell you which one to start with.
What Digital Consulting learned running its own Google Ads
Digital Consulting built a Google Ads campaign for its own SEO service in Cape Town in July 2026. These are the settings we changed from Google's defaults, and why:
- We replaced Performance Max with a search-only campaign on phrase and exact match keywords, so we can see every search we pay for.
- Keyword tools often show click prices in US dollars. Read as rand, one tool put our clicks at R4 to R8; Google's own forecast was about R28.
- Google's automatic form tracking counts form interactions. We count a lead only when the form has actually been sent, so the numbers mean something.
- By default Google also shows your ads to people "interested in" your area, wherever they are. We target people who are actually there.
- Auto-applied recommendations can switch your keywords to broad match without asking. We turn them off and review each one.
- In the first week we check the searches that triggered our ads every day and block the ones that don't fit. That's where most wasted money goes.
Search partners, display and automatically created ads stay off until the data says they'll help. Since September 2026, Google upgrades some campaigns to AI Max for Search automatically, so we check every account's settings each month.
Is Google Ads right for your business?
Google Ads works when people already search for what you sell. Here's how to tell:
A good fit
- Trades and home services: plumbers, electricians, builders
- Professional services: accountants, consultants, agencies
- Online shops, with Shopping ads for your products
- Tourism, guest houses and tours
- B2B companies whose buyers search for suppliers
Not yet
- Nobody searches for your product yet: Facebook ads build that demand first
- Less than about R5,000 a month for clicks
- A website that doesn't turn visitors into enquiries
- Gambling, online pharmacies or crypto without the licence or certification Google requires

Google Ads FAQs
You choose your budget, and Google has no minimum. Clicks are priced in an auction: one South African agency reports R18 to R30 a click for home services and R45 to R65 for legal services (2026). Google adds 15% VAT. Digital Consulting charges from R4,000 for setup, then from R2,000 a month or 12% of ad spend.
Yes. Google renamed Google AdWords to Google Ads on 24 July 2018, when it added more ways to advertise beyond search. Many South Africans still search for AdWords. It's the same platform, run from the same account, and the search ads work the same way.
Google has no minimum: you set a daily budget. On a busy day Google can spend up to twice that, but never more than 30.4 times your daily budget in a month. Digital Consulting recommends at least R5,000 a month, so there are enough clicks to learn from.
Google offers new South African advertisers ad credit when they spend in their first 60 days: R6,000 for spending R6,000, up to R18,000 for spending R36,000 (checked 28 October 2026). You must be new to Google Ads, sign up through the offer link and add a payment method during sign-up.
It's worth it when people search for what you sell and your website turns visitors into enquiries. Track every lead and compare the cost per lead with what a client is worth to you. Google forecast just under R500 per enquiry for Digital Consulting's own SEO campaign in Cape Town.
Google Ads brings clicks within days, but they stop the day you stop paying. SEO takes months to build but keeps bringing visitors without a cost per click. Many South African businesses run Google Ads for leads now while SEO builds up, then spend less on ads as rankings grow.
They do different jobs. Google Ads reaches people who are already searching for what you sell, so they're often ready to buy. Facebook and Instagram ads reach people by interest before they search, which builds demand. Businesses with search demand usually start on Google.
Ads can run within days of setup once Google approves them. The first month shows which searches bring enquiries and which waste money. Expect two to three months of weekly improvements before your cost per lead settles, and keep tracking it after that.
You do. The account is in your business's name and billed to your card, and Digital Consulting manages it with access you can remove at any time. Your ads, keywords, conversion data and history stay with you if you ever leave.
No. Monthly management runs month to month, and you can cancel with 30 days' notice. The setup fee is once-off and non-refundable once work has begun. Google bills your ad spend to your own card, so you can pause it any time.
